KETO – it’s not that scary

KETO … a very misunderstood word and approach to eating, some might picture a food plan that is strictly meat, eggs and butter. This is simply not the case, it’s not nearly as restricting as one might think it is, and there is certainly much more to offer then just meat and fat.
A body on Keto is running mainly off dietary fat, so yes there is a healthy mount of olive oil and butter used in cooking, varieties of cheese are encouraged as well. And we definitely do not stray away from types of meat that are rich in healthy fats like salmon, or high quality cuts of meat. But a good portion of the fats that are included in the diet are coming from a range of healthy foods such as nuts, avocados, seeds, coconut products among others.
And yes, as a rule starchy foods, sugar and other ingredients with are loaded with high carbohydrate content are avoided. But, it doesn’t mean that the door closes on all of the great meals that you typically enjoy.
For instance, tonight I am going to have a steak dinner with some wine. I am going to side it with asparagus and a twice baked potato. wait did I say potato? I meant a twice baked zucchini boat … its a recipe that I have been tweaking for a while, and I have to say it is so damn delicious that I don’t even think about the potato (will post this recipe shortly so that you can enjoy it too). That’s all it took for this meal to become keto, a delicious alternate.
How about stir fry noodles? No problem, all of the flavours you love; the fresh crisp vegetables and shrimp/pork/chicken, tossed with noodles. Yup noodles, just simply substitute the typical starchy noodles with ZERO carb Shirataki noodles. In a future post I will put up a favourite stir fry recipe of mine and include a little info on the shirataki noodle.

Eating on the go? Love your mexican food/Burrito Boyz (I know I do…)? Get your burrito naked, or as a burrito bowl – all of the restaurants offer an option like this. Its just as delicious and all you had to do was cut out the wrap and rice.
It just takes a couple small tweaks and your eating a Keto based diet and not even realizing anything different is happening on your plate. I will start a recipe section here to share all of the Keto friendly foods that I love, so keep checking back for these gems, you won’t be disappointed.
